Sharan was born in Warren, NSW in 1945 to a family with strong Trade Union involvement. She became a teacher in the early 1980's. This position allowed her to become involved in the NSW Teachers' Federation. She later became president of the Bathurst Trades and Labor Council. Before becoming ACTU president she was also president of the Australian Education Union (AEU) in 1992.
