Sharkey County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 6,580. Its county seat is Rolling Fork6. It is named after William L. Sharkey.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,126 km˛ (435 mi˛). 1,108 km˛ (428 mi˛) of it is land and 19 km˛ (7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.65% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,580 people, 2,163 households, and 1,589 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km˛ (15/mi˛). There are 2,416 housing units at an average density of 2/km˛ (6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 29.36% White, 69.32% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,163 households out of which 36.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.00% are married couples living together, 26.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.99 and the average family size is 3.56.


In the county the population is spread out with 33.00% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 11.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 88.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $22,285, and the median income for a family is $26,786. Males have a median income of $26,563 versus $17,931 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,396. 38.30% of the population and 30.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 50.00% of those under the age of 18 and 24.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
