Sharkey County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 6,580. Its county seat is Rolling Fork6. It is named after William L. Sharkey.
Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,126 km˛ (435 mi˛). 1,108 km˛ (428 mi˛) of it is land and 19 km˛ (7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.65% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,580 people, 2,163 households, and 1,589 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km˛ (15/mi˛). There are 2,416 housing units at an average density of 2/km˛ (6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 29.36% White, 69.32% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,163 households out of which 36.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.00% are married couples living together, 26.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
