Sheikh Khaz'al Khan, of royal Kuwaiti lineage, was the self-appointed ruler of a virtually autonomous Arab region (which came to be known as the 'emirate' of Arabistan or Al-Ahwaz under his reign) which he established in the Khuzestan province of Iran from 1897-1925. He made Muhammerah his capital, which he had almost entirely taken out of the control of the central government of Iran during the final years of the Qajar era, along with the city of Ahvaz. Originally supported by the British, his reign ended in 1925 when Reza Shah had him arrested and returned the region to Iran. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest in Tehran. There are three factors which may assist to varying degrees in determining whether someone is considered Arab or not: Political: whether they live in a country which is a member of the Arab League (or, more vaguely, the Arab world); this definition covers more than 300 million people. ...
