Shepparton is a country town located in Victoria, Australia. The name Shepparton derives from the town's position adjacent to the Golburn River. When first settled there was no bridge to link rich pastures on either sides of the Goulburn, so a punt was quickly established. Known as "Sheppard's Forge" the name contracted to "Sheppardstown" and finally "Shepparton". The City of Greater Shepparton has a population of about 60,000 people and is renowned as the home of the modern form of cricket. It is the home of leading fruit packagers SPC-Ardmona, and Kidstown; one of the largest outdoor playgrounds in Australia.
Shepparton is a major commercial centre, located between Nagambie and Numurkah on the Goulburn Valley Highway which is the main inland road route between Melbourne and Brisbane.
Shepparton is situated within the rich dairying, fruit growing and agricultural region of the Goulburn Valley, with the area responsible for producing around 25 percent of Victoria's rural output.
Shepparton's cultural precinct is located in Wellsford Street and consists of an art gallery featuring Australian ceramics and paintings, and a major war memorial located next to the council offices.
This is the latest element in a series of improvements along the Tongala-Kyabram-Shepparton corridor, which began in 1997 with the replacement of the water treatment plant and the rehabilitation of the existing wastewater treatment plant at Kyabram.
The project is clearly of great benefit to Shepparton since it will allow the large effluent discharge from local industry to be processed at the plant economically and in a more environmentally sustainable manner.
Shepparton lies to the north, in a region where the predominant industries are fruit, vegetable, beef and dairy processing.
