Sherman County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 3,318. Its county seat is Loup City6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,481 km˛ (572 mi˛). 1,466 km˛ (566 mi˛) of it is land and 15 km˛ (6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.01% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,318 people, 1,394 households, and 935 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km˛ (6/mi˛). There are 1,839 housing units at an average density of 1/km˛ (3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.49% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,394 households out of which 27.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 5.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% are non-families. 30.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.91.


In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 4.50% from 18 to 24, 23.70% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 23.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $28,646, and the median income for a family is $34,821. Males have a median income of $23,065 versus $17,269 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,064. 12.90% of the population and 8.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.40% of those under the age of 18 and 12.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Sherman County, one of the western tier, the second south from Nebraska, is bounded on the north by Cheyenne county; on the east by Thomas; on the south by Wallace and Logan, and on the west by the State of Colorado.
In the spring of 1886 there was such an influx of new settlers that the population was sufficient for county organization.
The vote was not properly canvassed and a mandamus was issued by the supreme court the next spring to compel a canvass of all the returns of the election.
