Shinŭiju Special Administrative Region is a special administrative region of North Korea, on the border with China. It was established in 2002 near the city of Shinŭiju to try introducing the market economy.


Chinese-Dutch businessman Yang Bin was appointed to be the first governor by the SPA Presidium in 2002. Before he could fill his post he was arrested by Chinese authorities and sentenced to 18 years in prison for tax evasion and other economic crimes.
