McIsaac was elected as a councillor to the London Borough of Wandsworth, before her selection for Cleethorpes from an all-women shortlist known as Blair Babes, attracting a great deal of local press attention in the run-up to the 1997 general election. Typical of many marginal constituencies that year, Cleethorpes had a "large" amount of support from the central Labour Party including visits by John Prescott, Tony Blair, Jim Davidson and Teresa May and a high-profile, high-visibility poster campaign. Majority

McIsaac was re-elected at the 2005 general election. Her majority was cut in the 2005 general election, receiving 43% of the vote. The Conservative candidate for the third election in a row failed to get over 37.3% of the votes with a significant increase in the Liberal Democrat vote. The Conservative vote has been so disappointing there is talk of a local Liberal Democrat candidate being the best chance to beat her.
