Currently the company operates 140 ShopKo stores in 15 states. These stores are placed in mid-sized to large communities. Such stores are multi-department operations.


When James Rueben - a Green Bay pharmacist - opened the first store in 1962 he envisioned a larger retail store with health care services combined with the retail operations. Pamida

The Pamida brand concentrates on smaller markets in communities consisting of 2,000 to 8,000 people. Such communities have generally been bypassed by larger chains, such as Wal-Mart and K-Mart. In some cases Pamida is the only large retailer in town. Pamida stores offer hardlines, softlines, and seasonal items. The company also has its own pharmacy division. Pamida traces its history back to 1948 when Jim Witherspoon and Lee Wegener. They began their business as a "service merchandise" business in which 22 salespeople in a five state area would provide stores with items such as health and beauty items, housewares, records, tapes, as well as some softlines items. In 1962 they opened an outlet store in Knoxville, Iowa as part of Gibson products company. This proved a sucess, and the company soon began to expand into other markets. Knoxville is a city located in Marion County, Iowa. ...


By the 1970's, the relationship with Gibbons ended, and the partners began using the Pamida name on their stores. The Pamida name comes from the first to letters of the names of Witherspoon's sons - Pat, Mike, and Dave. In 1981 Witherspoon and Wegener sold their business to their employees. In 1986 the company was acquired by Citigroup. Finally in 1999, Pamida became a division of ShopKo Stores, Inc.
