Pamida traces its history back to 1948 when Jim Witherspoon and Lee Wegener. They began their business as a "service merchandise" business in which 22 salespeople in a five state area would provide stores with items such as health and beauty items, housewares, records, tapes, as well as some softlines items. In 1962 they opened an outlet store in Knoxville, Iowa as part of Gibson products company. This proved a sucess, and the company soon began to expand into other markets. By the 1970's, the relationship with Gibbons ended, and the partners began using the Pamida name on their stores. The Pamida name comes from the first to letters of the names of Witherspoon's sons - Pat, Mike, and Dave. In 1981 Witherspoon and Wegener sold their business to their employees.
