Originally called "Short's Mills," Shortsville began its existence in 1804 when Theophilus Short built two mills on the shores of the Canandiagua Outlet. The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.08% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.08% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races.
