The route serves the following places:

The line follows the Glasgow branch of West Coast Main Line (WCML) as far as Uddingston, and joins the Edinburgh branch of the WCML at Kirknewton. Both of these sections of the WCML are electrified at 25 kV AC overhead. The line between Uddingston and Holytown is also electrified, and is used by Argyle Line services. The central section, between Holytown and Kirknewton is not electrified. Passenger services are operated by First ScotRail.
