In 1978 Team competitions began, also Women were allowed to compete against Men for the first time. From 1990 Show Jumping was brought together along with the other equestrian disciplines into the World Equestrian Games (WEG). They are held every four years. A World Championship(s) is any contest or series of contests (which may work alongside a ranking system) to determine the best nation, team, individual (or other entity) in the world in a particular field.
Certain sports do not have a World Championships, instead they may organise a World Cup, or they may organise both.
Professional Boxing for example has several World Champions at different weights, but each one of them is decided by a 'Title Fight', not a Championships.
