Sidama is one of the administrative zones in southern Ethiopia.
Sidama language is the language spoken by the Sidama people, 90% of whom do not speak Amharic/the national language/, or any other language beyond the Sidama language.
Sidama radio is recently established radio station located in Yirgalem town 45k.m from Awassa, the zonal capital, or 320 kms south from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
The personal intervention of PM Meles Zenawi who made a number of moves to undermine the Sidamas' demand for full regional status in place of the current zonal status under the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region only increased the resolve of Sidamas of all walks of life to materialise their demands.
The Sidama Concern is seriously concerned about the ongoing situation in Sidama which has semblance to the 24 May 2002 genocidal massacre, also known as the Looqe Massacre.
In Sidama, as a result of the May 2002 massacre, and in western Welega, as the heartland of OLF support, hostility to the regime runs very deep, and the declared results can only be the result either of heavy-handed government pressure before and during the vote, or else of fraud after it.
