Signals (Scottish Indie Band)

The band members are: Michael - Vocals, David - Drums, Chris - Bass, Mark - Guitar, Gerard (Gez) - Guitar. They began life after meeting at the St Andrew's Academy in Paisley. Resulting in a 5-piece indie band.

Michael Cassidy, Mark Dunn & Gerard “Gez” Sharp, formed signals in the summer of 2003. They were 3 school friends with a shared interest in rock music whilst others seemed to prefer manufactured pop & dance music. Michael & Mark had become friends from being put in the same class together & as for Gez, he and Michael became friends whilst solving riddles on the school bus home.

After all three began learning to play the guitar, they would meet often at Gez’s “guitar room” to jam. By summer 2003, they had finished their standard grades and could concentrate on music. The band entered the school talent show playing SUM 41’s “In Too Deep”, “borrowing” the 4th year bands drummer, David Kempsell. Soon after this event David quit his old band & joined forces with Michael, Mark & Gez to form Pyro.

The band got a bassist & played a few small gigs here & there, playing mainly covers with one or two original songs. However after the summer of 2004, the band parted ways with the bass player & went on to enter the school talent show enlisting the help of a friend to play bass on a part time basis. The name Pyro was dropped and Signals were formed.

The band went on to win the talent show playing a medley of Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out”, Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” & going out with Red Hot Chili Pepper’s funkadelic “Fortune Faded.”

After 4 months of rehearsals, Signals got their first gig at Ivory Blacks. (Previously "Strawberry Fields" were another Scottish band "Garbage" was discovered). The band performed for the first time with their own material at the "Emergenza" on 11 April 2005. The judges for the show voted and Signals won the contest, earning a place in Emergenza Scottish semi-finals. The manager at Ivory Blacks was impressed enough with the band that he gave them time to record their first demo at the club.

Receiving a confidence boost from their first gig Signals prepared for the next task, the Emergenza Scottish semi-final at Strathclyde University. The band started with the famous "Play That Funky Music" riff which endeared them to a mostly student crowd and after completing their set, found themselves again voted through to the next round, the Emergenza Scottish Final in Carling Academy.

Sunday 26th June seen Signals perform on one of Scotlands biggest venues - Glasgow Carling Academy. An amazing night was had by the band and were happy with claiming 3RD PLACE out of 17 bands at the Emergenza Scottish Final.

Shortly after the gig the band were asked to record a demo for a local record company.[1] The band continue to gig throughout Scotland and particularly the Glasgow area.
