Silverton is a city located in Hamilton County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,178.

Silverton is located at 39°11'28" North, 84°24'10" West (39.191160, -84.402762)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.9 km˛ (1.1 mi˛). 2.9 km˛ (1.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,178 people, 2,534 households, and 1,256 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,801.1/km˛ (4,647.8/mi˛). There are 2,662 housing units at an average density of 925.9/km˛ (2,389.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 45.52% White, 50.31% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 2.36% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,534 households out of which 19.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.2% are married couples living together, 14.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.4% are non-families. 45.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.00 and the average family size is 2.84.


In the city the population is spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 80.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.9 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $35,117, and the median income for a family is $43,633. Males have a median income of $27,682 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,971. 9.5% of the population and 5.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
