While Sima Shi was stationed at Yuejia he was surprised by Wen Qin's forces from Xiangcheng. Wen Qin and his son Wen Yang flanked the Wei camp, established the night before, by dawn. Shi had recently had a tumor removed from his left eye, and he was laying down, when on the third watch roars broke the camp's silence. It was immediately reported to him that the enemy force had attacked the camp. Shi was overtaken by an instant pressure through his body, the wound from his surgery burst, and his eye fell out of its socket. Instead of undermining his force's morale by retreating, Shi took a piece of his sheet bedding and clamped it between his teeth to relieve the pain. Wei's army forced the retreat of Wen Qin and his men.
