Simhavishnu also known as Avanisimha, son of Simhavarman III was one of the famous Pallavan kings of India. During his reign he ruled from Kanchipuram (Kanchi) (Tamil Nadu). He established a strong Pallava kingdom with a very strong army. He was stated as a great conqueror in Mattavilasa Prahasana(drunken revelry), a drama written by his son Mahendra Varman I. Reign period

Different historians have came up with different periods. There is no consesus yet. The recent epigraphical evidence supports the period of 537-570 as the reignal period of Simhavishnu whereas older generation historians like T.V.Mahalingam claimed it to be 575-615. Expansion of Kingdom

Simhavishnu defeated Cholas,Cheras, Pandyas and Kalabhras and revived the pallava rule which was on decline due to the onlsaught of the Kalabhras. The new dynasty of the Pallavas with its capital in Kanchipuram, established by Simhavishnu during the last quarter of 6th Century is known as Greater Pallavas or Later Pallavas dynasty. He is the first Pallava king whose kingdoms extended further south beyond Kanchi. His dominions seems to extended as far as Kaveri River in the south. The Cholas were the most famous of the three dynasties that ruled ancient Tamil Nadu. ... The Cheras were one of the three ancient Tamil dynasties who ruled the southern peninsula of India at the beginning of its recorded history. ... The Pandyan kingdom was an ancient state at the tip of South India, founded around the 6th century BCE. It was part of the Dravidian cultural area, which also comprised other kingdoms such as that of the Pallava, the Chera, the Chola, the Chalukya and the Vijayanagara. ... Simhavishnu eliminated all his southern neighbors including the ruler of Ceylon and seized the country of Cholas. A great struggle between the Pallavas and their archenemy Chalukyas erupted during the reign of Simhavishnu which continued for generations until the Chalukyas took over Kanchi in the first half of the 8th century.


Religious affliation

Simhavishnu was a devotee of Vishnu. This is a notewothy point as his son Mahendravarman I was a Jaina who opposed all the saivaite practises before being converted into Saivism.
