The Semien Mountains lie in northern Ethiopia, north east of Gonder. They are a World Heritage Site and a national park. The mountains consist of plateaux separated by valleys and rising to pinnacles. They rise to 4,543m at Ras Dashen. Notable animals in the mountains are walia ibex, gelada baboons and a few Ethiopian wolves. Despite their ruggedness and altitude, the mountains are dotted with villages linked by tracks.
