The album was renamed "If You Could Read My Mind" shortly after release, due to that song making #5 on the charts.
This was Lightfoot's first album on the Reprise Records label. He was previously with United Artists Records, but left because he believed they did not promote his albums well enough.
A small number of vinyl copies contain no title. The reason for this is that when first releases, there was originally just supposed to be the picture of lightfoot, no title, but the title was added very shortly after because it was thought that it's prescence would increase sales.
First studio album to feature long-time Lightfoot bassist Rick Haynes.
Perhaps this is because his music is closely related to the country-western spirit, and he feels akin to the land.
When Lightfoot sings about traveling or love, he is not really describing the plastic world of today's young people, but a nostalgic one of candy apples, diesel trucks, and trains.
"SitDownYoungStranger" is a graceful, introspective ballad.
The song was originally featured on his 1970 album "SitDownYoungStranger" which had not been selling that well.
After the success of the song, the album on which it was originally featured was re-released under the new title "If You Could Read My Mind" to capitalize on the success of the song.
In 2003, a tribute album Beautiful was released featuring cover versions of Lightfoot songs by various artists include The Tragically Hip, Cowboy Junkies, Ron Sexsmith and Jesse Winchester.
