Sitapur is a town and district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is in the Lucknow Division of Uttar Pradesh. The town is on the river Sarayan, half-way between Lucknow and Shahjahanpur, on the Lucknow-Delhi National Highway No-24 and on the Lucknow-Bareilly railway, 89 km. N.W. from the state capital Lucknow. In British India it was a cantonment, garrisoned by a portion of a British regiment. The tradational origin for the name is said to be from Lord Ram's wife Sita. Sitapur was established by the king Vikarmaditya after the name of Lord Ram's wife Sita. This place is concerned with ancient, medieval and modern history. This is a land of seer and sufis. Purans were written by Rishi Ved Vyas on this holi land. According to Hindu mythology the 'Panch Dham Yatra' journey of five main religious Hindu places will not be completed without visiting the Neemsar or Namisharanya, a religious ancient place in Sitapur. Dargah of Hazrat Makhdoom sb. at Khairabad and Hazrat Gulzar Shah are the symbols of communal harmony.



The District of Sitapur has an area of 5743 sq. km. It presents the appearance of a vast plain, sloping imperceptibly from an elevation of 150 m. above sea-level in the north-west to 100 m. in the south-east. It is intersected by numerous streams and ravines, and contains many shallow ponds and natural reservoirs, which overflow during the rains, but become dry in the hot season. Except in the eastern portion, which lies in the doabs between the Kewani and Chauka and the Gogra and Chauka rivers, the soil is as a rule dry, but even this moist tract is interspersed with patches of land covered with saline efflorescence called reh. The principal rivers are the Gogra, which is navigable by boats of large tonnage throughout the year, and the Chauka. As of 1911, the annual rainfall averaged about 38 in. Agriculture is still the primary activity, with wheat, rice, and urad being the main crops with sugarcane, mustard & groundnuts as the cash crops. The district is traversed by meter gauge railway from Lucknow to Bareilly and on broad gauge train network connecting Gorakhpur and Delhi via Gonda, Burhwal. The history of Sitapur is closely associated with that of the rest of Awadh. Hospitals

Eye Hospital: Its present location at Sitapur, in an area of 12 acres. The foundation of the present structure was laid in 1943.


The Sitapur Eye Hospital is managed by Sitapur Eye Hospital Trust, which was created through an initial donation of Rs.10,000/- by the widow of a school teacher, Smt. Naraino Devi.It was started by Dr. Mehra By the year 1945 the vast main building, as it stands today, was completed. The hospital since then has grown from strength to strength to reach the status of a premier Eye Institution of India, a centre of excellence and internationally recognised. It continues to render dedicated service to the rural poor irrespective of their inability to meet the high cost of treatment.


The increasing rush of patients through the year saw the hospital grow from strength to strength to reach its current bed strength of 1000 out of which 800 caters as general wards and 200 provide service as private wards. With a view to carrying relief to the doorsteps of the uneducated and poor patients, it was planned to set up branch hospitals at many district headquraters of Uttar Pradesh. The first branch hospital was set up in 1949 at Faizabad. At present, the organisation renders service to 32 districts of U.P. through its well-equipped branch hospitals, covering nearly half of the population of the state. The entire organisation has strength of 1000 beds at the base hospital sitapur and another 1400 beds in branch hospitals.
