Skerik (née Eric Walton) is a saxophone player native to Seattle, Washington. Performing on the tenor and baritone saxophone, often with electronics and loops, Skerik is a pioneer in a playing style that has been dubbed saxophonics. He is a founding member of Critters Buggin and Garage a Trois and has performed with Les Claypool's Frog Brigade (2001) and Fancy Band (2006), Stanton Moore, Galactic, The Rhythm Section, Ponga, Sadhappy, Buckethead, Tuatara (with Peter Buck), Mad Season, The Meters, Fred Wesley, The Headhunters, Roger Waters, Hella and many others. He has recently led Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet. Also, Skerik has tapped long-time duomates Brian Coogan (organ/keyboards) and Simon Lott (drums) for a band dubbed "Maelstrom Trio," combining disparate elements such as free jazz, funk, metal and textural music. In March 2007, he toured similarly with Mike Dillon and New Orlean's Jazz bassist James Singleton as The Illuminasty Trio. In April 2007 Skerik performs duet in New York with Bobby Previte and then in New Orleans during Jazz Fest with many. Image File history File linksMetadata No higher resolution available. ... NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Skerik (922 words)
Performing on the tenor and baritone saxophone, Skerik is a pioneer in a playing style that has been dubbed saxophonics.
The septet consists of Skerik on tenor saxophone, Craig Flory on baritone saxophone and clarinet, Dave Carter on trumpet, Hans Teuber on alto saxophone and flute, Steve Moore on trombone and Wurlitzer, Joe Doria on Hammond B-3 and John Wicks on drums.
Skerik named the band after the term, "Syncopated Taint," which was used by America's first ever drug czar Harry J. Anslinger to describe the nation's moral decay in the 1930s and '40s as caused by the combination of jazz and marijuana.
Ropeadope Records (1986 words)
skerik grew up in seattle and was exposed early on to jazz by his father, who was a big fan of jazz musicians like count basie and dave brubeck.
skerik received some early mentorship from the teachers in his school's music program, playing in the jazz ensemble, orchestra and getting turned on to saxophone legends like charlie rouse, booker irvin, don byas, john coltrane, sonny rollins and wayne shorter.
currently, apart from his work with the syncopated taint septet, skerik is active with several groups that either he leads or co-leads, such as fl frames, garage-a-trois, critters buggin, and a free improvisation duo with mike dillon.
