Encyclopedia > Skint

Skint Records is a Brighton based dance music record label owned by Damien Harris, who releases records through the Midfield General pseudonym. The label was, together with Wall of Sound, a leader in the big beat music scene of the mid to late 1990s.

The label's roster at this time included scene leaders Fatboy Slim, Hardknox, Indian Rope Man, Cut la Roc and Sparky Lightbourne. Towards the end of the 1990s and at the start of the 21st century the label had expanded its range of releases to include more house based songs, most prominently 'Lazy' by XPress 2, which charted at number 2 in the UK charts, and releases by legendary techno artist Dave Clark. One mainstay band of the label has been the Lo-Fidelity Allstars who have changed and diversified their style along with the label.

Skint are the holders of the longest ever Football League sponsorship deal, as their current contract with Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. will see them having been present as the main kit sponsor for seven years. Their name, however, does not appear consistently across all the Brighton and Hove shirts, with some variation in logo, and even the complete replacement of the company's name with Palookaville on one of the shirt designs.

Skint is a complex play that brought up many challenges for me as director.
Skint uses as a starting point the origins of myths regarding The Waste Land and the Fisher King.
Legend has it that the Fisher King is ill and decrepit, causing a blight on the land; various heroic figures try to intervene and heal him to remedy the land, as in the King Arthur myth.
