Skowhegan is a census-designated place located in Somerset County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 6,696.


Geography

Skowhegan is located at 44°46'13" North, 69°42'54" West (44.770308, -69.715087)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 36.5 km˛ (14.1 mi˛). 34.7 km˛ (13.4 mi˛) of it is land and 1.8 km˛ (0.7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 5.04% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,696 people, 2,883 households, and 1,764 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 193.1/km˛ (500.2/mi˛). There are 3,193 housing units at an average density of 92.1/km˛ (238.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.66% White, 0.24% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,883 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 14.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.76.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.5 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $26,726, and the median income for a family is $33,081. Males have a median income of $26,484 versus $20,714 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,742. 17.4% of the population and 13.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.3% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Skowhegan is a town in Somerset County, Maine, in the United States.
The Skowhegan Falls, which descend 28 feet over a half mile on the Kennebec River, were once a popular destination for Abenaki Indians.
Consequently, they named the area "Skowhegan" (which they pronounced "Skoohegan"), meaning a "waiting place" or "place to watch [for fish]." Colonel Benedict Arnold and his troops passed through Skowhegan in 1775 on their way up the Kennebec River to Quebec.
