Biography The pair chose the name "Field Mob" to represent where they used to play tag in a dandelion fielded area, a small area of Albany where Smoke and Shawn Jay grew up. The two met in high school after Smoke saw Shawn Jay freestyling in the school courtyard. Smoke challenged him to a battle the next day, and afterwards they decided to become partners. The Mob landed a deal with a small independent record label and recorded their first single which caught the attention of MCA Records. MCA quickly signed them to a deal, and in 2000, they released their first album, 613: Ashy to Classy. Despite their age and lack of experience, 613: Ashy to Classy is a polished effort that features clever lyrics and solid production. The same can be said for From Tha Roota to Tha Toota, the 2002 follow-up that showed the Georgia natives collaborating with Trick Daddy and moving closer to the Outkast-esque production work they hinted at on their debut. The pair of youngsters has shown they can compete with the best Hip Hop has to offer, and they'll do it while wearing their country roots with pride. Smoke of Field Mob is singer Ciara's cousin. In many of their songs, Smoke refers to himself as "Chevy P (Chevy Pendergrass)", and Shawn Jay often calls himself "The Fleetwood Mack". " Smoke and Shawn Jay appeared on a dvd slaying New York rappers on how they talking about making a comeback and shutting down the south. Shawn Jay says he invites any N.Y. rapper to test his lyrcial skills, the southern rappers states "This is the south, not no damn westcoast..we'll show you something down here. You don't want no eastcoast versus down south war." In a segment of a southern local dvd taping he challenges rap pioneers Nas and Jay-Z. He talks about how it doesn't matter because the south is too strong for N.Y. rappers.
