Plot
The film opens with Agents Messner and Carruthers staking out crime lord Primo Sparazza's house. They pick up a telephone call between Sparazza's Underboss Sidney K. Serna and Capo Victor "Baby Buzz" Padiche, who mention that Sparazza has put out a $1 million hit on Buddy "Aces" Israel, he also wants his heart. They plan to hire several assassin candidates, most notably the mysterious Swede, to collect the reward themselves. It is then revealed that Buddy Israel is a popular Las Vegas magician. Israel had become friends with Primo Sparazza early in his career and made a part of the Nevada Mafia. Sparazza was in his time a deadly gangster who killed many top FBI agents, including the undercover agent Freeman Heller in the 50s; he has since been bedridden. Israel wished to become a true wise guy and planned to overthrow Sparazza and the other families. Israel began undertaking various crimes that landed him in trouble. Soon, Sparazza and Israel split into two gangs. Now that the hit has been posted, Israel is a part of the Witness Protection Program and is going to give up the information on Sparazza. Messner and Carruthers are informed by deputy director Locke of the FBI that with the threat of assassins, they have to go to Israel's Lake Tahoe penthouse to protect him while Locke negotiates with Israel's lawyer Marty Mecklen. At the same time bail bondsman Jack Dupree tells the Israel story to his bounty hunter partners, "Pistol" Pete Deeks and Hollis Elmore. At the same time hitwomen Sharice Watters and Georgia Sykes are hired by Padiche to kill Israel. Torture expert and mercenary Pasquale Acosta, the psychotic neo-Nazi/redneck Tremor Brothers and deadly master of disguise Lazlo Soot also joined in on the hit. At the Nomad Hotel and Casino in Lake Tahoe with his friends Ivy, Hugo and Beanie; Buddy Israel is taking his time to lounge around all day bossing around his guards, enjoying his prostitutes and snorting cocaine. He soon orders Sir Ivy to get more prostitutes for him and Hugo to bring his ruined jacket to his personal butler. Carruthers and Messner are at a bar in Vegas where they are talking about Primo Sparazza and joke about Israel's problems. At the same time each hitman and bounty hunter is descending on the hotel. Pasquale Acosta disguises himself as an FBI agent and asks to speak with the Nomad security supervisor. Georgia Sykes plans to pose as one of Israel's prostitutes and kill him when she is let inside the penthouse while Sharice Watters covers her with a 50 cal. M107 Long Range Sniper Rifle at the hotel across the street. At the lake, Jack Dupree explains his plan to Pete and Hollis to sneak into the hotel using security uniforms before a car emblazoned with a balkenkreuz blaring heavy metal music pulls up and shoots them to death with machine guns. Lazlo Soot has already gotten inside the basement and killed several janitors and Israel's butler. As he tries to mimic the butler's voice, Hugo comes to the door. Soot kills him and begins making a latex cast of his face. Also, it turns out to be the Tremors who steal Dupree's uniforms and car, dump the bodies in the lake and proceed to the hotel. The death of Dupree travels fast and Messner is ordered to go to the murder scene to examine the bodies while Carruthers goes to the hotel to save Israel. At this point Acosta talks to Bill the head of Security who claims the penthouse level is under construction, but Acosta is sure that is where Israel is hiding. He kills Bill and steals his uniform. Thereafter Sykes changes into her hooker outfit and waits by the elevator for the new hookers. In the penthouse Mecklen tells Buddy on the phone that Locke wants him to sell out everybody to the FBI. He is very reluctant at first but finally agrees. Ivy overheard the entire conversation however. Hollis emerges from Lake Tahoe deeply sick and with three missing fingers. After wandering through the woods half dead, he finds an old remote cabin inhabited by a ADHD afflicted boy and his grandmother. They take him in and treat his wounds although their strange behavior bewilders him, mostly due to the fact that the troubled boy sees him as his nemesis. He begins looking through their things and finds the grandmother's late husband's gun and tells her he'll borrow it. Carruthers arrives at the hotel and asks for a guard to take him upstairs to the penthouse he is pointed in the direction of Acosta in disguise and the two go upstairs together. While in the elevator Carruthers begins to suspect the guard of being Acosta (whom Locke warned him of). Once the tension grows the two draw on each other with Carruthers being stabbed before the two shoot each other to the floor. Lazlo Soot arrives upstairs disguised as Hugo and murders Beanie. Ivy confronts Israel about the phone call with Mecklen. After denying it, Israel admits his betrayal and claims he did it because he is simply more important than his friends are to the FBI. Ivy prepares to kill him for giving up his friends, only to be thwarted when Buddy flicks a card and cuts his eye. He starts firing blindly, Soot and Israel take cover and the security team breaks in and stops Ivy, who is blamed for Beanie's death and arrested. Israel breaks down while Soot starts displaying surgical tools unnoticed. Outside of the room, the guards find the elevators unresponsive and begin to worry. In Los Angeles, Locke is given an aged memo. After reading it Locke backs out on Israel's deal and orders no one to inform Messner or Carruthers. Messner arrives at the hotel with other agents. After he is told that there is a man disguised as an FBI agent, Messner begins searching for Carruthers. The elevators are all shut down now, and the Tremors are successful in getting in with the uniforms. They use a mobile generator to jump start their elevator before preparing a siege. Upstairs Georgia disagrees with Sharice's idea to leave since things seem to be getting too dangerous. Georgia opens the elevator doors to find the unconscious and dying Carruthers and Acosta. She checks their pockets and finds that they are both FBI agents, to which Sharice says that one of them must be Lazlo Soot (whom they were warned of earlier). Since no one knows what he looks like, Georgia is in a dilemma, planning to kill whichever she thinks is the fake. Messner hears her over Carruthers' earpiece and sets up a position around her elevator. Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains of the United States. ...

Upstairs, ominous smoke comes from the elevator and the guards draw their guns. Soon the doors open and the Tremors rush out screaming; armed with an arsenal of weapons. Also Israel tries to kill himself when Mecklen calls and tells him that Locke backed out on the deal and left him to die, but he goes into cardiac arrest before he can do so. Downstairs Georgia tells Sharice to help her. Sharice responds by firing on Messner and the agents, who start firing rapidly out of the windows. After Georgia and Messner exchange fire, Pasquale Acosta shoots her and is in turn shot three more times by the now conscious Carruthers before he can kill her. Georgia loses contact with Sharice now that her radio was shot and Messner becomes distraught when Carruthers dies. Sharice is misled when she sees a hooker that Georgia killed, thinking it is Georgia, she empties the rest of the rounds out of her rifle in anger and sorrow. Georgia gets away in the elevator and heads upstairs where the Tremors have elaborately yet viciously slaughtered the entire security team. Although Sir Ivy grabs a gun and kills Jeeves and Lester Tremor, this starts a fight with Darwin Tremor. Once Georgia arrives, she finds Darwin about to kill Ivy with an axe before she draws her gun on him. She soon collapses in Ivy's arms, letting Darwin escape, and the two go in the stairwell as Locke and other agents arrive. Darwin gets out posing as an FBI agent but is robbed and shot to death in the parking lot by a waiting Hollis later. The feds break in and stop Soot from proceeding with his plans on Israel. On the stairwell, Ivy and Georgia begin to grow attracted to each other, but the scarred Messner arrives and engages in a standoff with Georgia. After she tells him that she didn't kill Carruthers or want to kill anyone else, he lets them leave. Messner goes to the penthouse and asks Locke to explain what happened but is interrupted by Soot who wounds a guard and quickly gets away disguised as a butler. Ivy carries Georgia outside, The living Acosta is carried out on a stretcher, Soot leaves disguised as a security guard. Sharice sees Georgia alive but is attacked by agents, and presumably killed. Messner arrives at the hospital where the now comatose Israel was taken and finds Locke. He puts a gun to his back and orders him to tell him why they were not informed to leave the mission when the agency backed out on Israel's deal. Locke leads them into a room where Israel and Primo Sparazza are inside, comatose and bed to bed. It is revealed that they are father and son, Sparazza had had an affair with a Vegas showgirl in the sixties who gave birth to Israel. Messner understands that Sparazza wanting Israel's heart was not for a vendetta but for a transplant, which the FBI is setting up. The Swede was actually a head of cardiology who will make the transplant. Messner doesn't understand why they would kill Israel to keep Sparazza alive though. To which Locke gives Messner the memo he received earlier. It is revealed in this memo that Primo Sparazza is really FBI agent Freeman Heller (Sparazza's supposed victim) who went undercover in the 40s as Sparazza after heavy plastic surgery. He was believed to have gone rogue and was left by the FBI, after that his alias became his identity. Heller/Sparazza has made a new deal with the FBI: Israel's heart for all of information he has on the Mafia. Messner doesn't care, as he is furious over Carruthers and the other deaths and believes that even if they saved Sparazza his info may not be valid. Locke threatens to fire him after an outburst but instead orders him to forget about the mission and leave. Messner agrees and Locke leaves the room. Messner stands for a moment before he tearfully walks into Israel and Sparazza's room, locks the door behind him, and takes a seat in between the beds. He proceeds to pull the plugs on their life support systems, and quietly lays down his gun, ammo and badge. Seconds later, Locke, the Swede and many of the agents are desperately trying to break in and stop him. Messner continues to sit in disbelief as Buddy Israel and Primo Sparazza die, taking all of the agency's hopes with them. A Las Vegas showgirl, from the Folies Bergere. ...
Cast - Ryan Reynolds as Special Agent Richard Messner: An FBI agent working with his partner and mentor Donald Carruthers. He and Carruthers are assigned to protect Buddy Israel from bounty hunters. While Carruthers is at the hotel, Messner goes down to Lake Tahoe to examine Jack and Pete's dead bodies. When he arrives at the hotel he finds Carruthers fatally wounded by an assassin, at which point his motivations become personal. He is angry when he learns the truth behind Primo Sparazza. In the end he kills Sparazza and Israel in an act of revenge.
In the companion mini-comic to the movie, it is revealed that Messner had initially declined the Sparazza assignment, instead doing an undercover investigation of a robbery ring. However, the endeavor ends in disgrace when, ironically, every member of the suspected gang is revealed to be a U.S. government agent, all conducting undercover work on each other's aliases. Messner's superiors then offer him a choice between an indefinite suspension or reassignment to spying on Sparazza with Agent Carruthers. Ryan Rodney Reynolds (born October 23, 1976) is a Canadian born actor. ...
- Jeremy Piven as Buddy "Aces" Israel: Buddy Israel is a former Las Vegas magician with ties to the mafia, which he betrays when he agrees to turn evidence against Mob boss Sparazza. To prevent his testimony, two assassins are hired to kill him and retrieve his heart, for a reward of $1 million. After word of the contract gets around, several other hitmen and teams of assassins go after Aces with the intent of reaping the bounty. During most of the film Aces hides in his high-price suite, surrounding himself with bodyguards and prostitutes. As he continually snorts cocaine, he becomes increasingly depressed to the brink of suicide. At the end of the film it is revealed that Aces was in fact being used by the FBI, who were planning to transplant his heart to Sparazza to keep him alive. He is also revealed to be the illegitimate son of Sparazza. He and Sparazza are finally killed by FBI Agent Messner as revenge for the death of Messner's partner, which was indirectly caused by the contract on Aces.
- Martin Henderson as Hollis Elmore: An ex-vice cop and partners with "Pistol" Pete Deeks. Hollis is hired by Jack Dupree to capture Buddy Israel. Hollis seemed skeptical of the mission but went along with the plan. When the three are discussing the plan, Hollis, Jack and Pete are shot by the Tremors. He survives, losing three fingers. Hollis emerges from the lake and finds a cabin inhabited by a mentally disturbed boy and his grandmother. He borrows her late husband's pistol and finds Darwin, the last surviving Tremor. When Darwin apoligises, Hollis lets him go, only to change his mind soon after and shoot Darwin to death.
- Ben Affleck as Jack Dupree: A world weary and serious Las Vegas bail bondsman hired by Rip Reed to capture Buddy Israel. Along the way he hires ex-cops Pete and Hollis to help him. Jack's plan was for them to sneak into the casino as security guards but the Tremor brothers gunned down Jack and his friends at the lake and stole their uniforms. Their deaths are later avenged by Hollis, who survives the attack and proceeds to hunt down the Tremors, eventually killing Darwin.
- Andy García as Assistant Director Stanley Locke: The soft spoken Assistant Director of the FBI negotiating with Buddy Israel. Locke informs Carruthers and Messner that they have to protect Israel from the bounty hunters. Later, Locke is given a memo and after reading it backs out on his deal and neglects the two agents from going through with their mission. In the end he informs Messner of Sparazza and Israel's connection and he tries to stop him from killing the two.
- Alicia Keys as Georgia Sykes: A killer for hire working with her partner Sharice Watters. Sykes and Watters gained notoriety after a hit on a triad. Their plan was for Sykes to sneak in as a prostitute for Buddy Israel. During a gun battle with FBI agents she is shot by the wounded Pasqual Acosta and accidentally kills a prostitute but escapes. She later encounters and saves Sir Ivy from Darwin Tremor. She and Ivy then, after making a truce with Messner, leave the hotel. Their fate is left in question.
- Ray Liotta as Special Agent Donald Carruthers: A veteran FBI agent who is the partner and friend of Richard Messner. He is present at the hotel before Messner, who was at the lake where Jack and Pete's bodies were found. When he is trying to find a security guard for help, he finds the disguised Pasqual Acosta and the two head upstairs in an elevator. Once he realizes who the guard is, Carruthers and Acosta draw their weapons and shoot each other several times. They are later found by Georgia Sykes before Messner and other agents arrive. And after he and Carruthers shoot Acosta again, Messner carries Carruthers out and he dies of his wounds soon after.
- Peter Berg as "Pistol" Pete Deeks: An ex vice cop and partners with Hollis Elmore. Pete is hired by Jack Dupree to help capture Buddy Israel. Pete, unlike Hollis, seems to go along with the plan Dupree has laid out due to gambling debts and missed mortgage payments. When the three are discussing the plan, Pete and Jack are shot to death in cold blood by the Tremors.
- Common as Sir Ivy: A friend and bodyguard of Buddy Israel's. He overhears Israel's talk with Mecklen about Israel having to sell out Ivy, Hugo and Beanie to the FBI. Ivy confronts Israel about this and he confesses to everything. Ivy tries to kill Israel but is arrested by guards. As they take him away, the Tremors attack and Ivy is left to watch the massacre. He kills Jeeves and Lester and is saved by Georgia from Darwin. They are both instantly attracted to each other and Ivy takes her outside and they escape.
- Taraji P. Henson as Sharice Watters: A killer for hire working with Georgia Sykes. Sykes and Watters gained notoriety after they perform a hit on a Chinese Triad group. It is implied that Sharice is bisexual. Also, that she is in love with her partner Georgia. During Sykes' shootout with the FBI, Sharice thinks they have killed Sykes and Sharice starts sniping the agents from afar. Just when her hope is lost, she spots Ivy carrying Georgia outside. Agents then come into her position and open fire. It is likely that she didn't survive.
- Chris Pine as Darwin Tremor: The oldest of the three Tremor brothers, who are ruthless redneck hitmen. They manage to kill Jack Dupree and his team, and sneak into the hotel. Darwin makes the attack on the penthouse using machetes, an M3 Grease Gun, and Stielhandgranates. Darwin also possesses a Sten Mk.II, a German officer's pistol, and a baseball bat. They start killing the guards and his brothers are killed by Sir Ivy. Darwin tries to kill him but Georgia comes and stops him. Darwin manages to escape by jumping in the elevator, using the distraction created by Georgia's initial attraction to Sir Ivy. Darwin gets away by coming out of the elevator crying and waving a FBI badge. He gets to the parking lot to find one of his victims, Hollis, waiting for him. Darwin apologizes for shooting him, stating that it was nothing personal. Hollis simply asks for the keys to his car back in exchange for letting Darwin live. Darwin duly returns the keys and just when he thinks he is free, Hollis has a change of heart and shoots him to death.
In the online comic on the film's website, the Tremors are seen attacking a terrorist camp in Syria at the behest of an unknown agency, and are tuned in to the Buddy Israel situation almost by accident, after finding some anti-Semitic notes on their victims ("Death to Israel"). - Kevin Durand as Jeeves Tremor: The largest and youngest of the Tremor brothers, he does little throughout the film other than wrestle with his brother Lester. He makes an assault on the penthouse with his brothers using an Armsel Striker revolving shotgun and a chainsaw. After Sir Ivy kills Lester, Jeeves is enraged and throws down his shotgun try to kill Ivy with his chainsaw. Ivy used all of his ammo on Lester, so he frantically grabs a dead cop's pistol and shoots Jeeves in both of his knees. While Jeeves is trying to get up, Ivy shoots him again causing him to fall on his chainsaw. He is later seen dead, but still sitting upright.
- Maury Sterling as Lester Tremor: The smallest of the Tremor brothers. Lester seems to be the most technically proficient, as he was the one that fixed the elevator with a portable generator when it was shut down. He assaults the penthouse with his brothers using a Glock 18 and a double barreled shotgun. While reloading his gun, Lester is shot dead by Sir Ivy.
- Tommy Flanagan as Lazlo Soot: A deadly master of disguise and the main hitman assigned to kill Israel. Soot kills and disguises himself as Hugo the bodyguard. He murders Beanie and before he can get to perform his "surgery" on Israel, the FBI come in and arrested him. He manages to wound an agent, shed his disguise and escape the building in a security uniform. In the end he was revealed that he was hired to kill Israel's guards to make way for the Swede.
- Joseph Ruskin as Primo Sparazza: A dying mafia boss who has been active since the 1950s. He is actually Freeman Heller of the FBI, an undercover agent in the mafia. Heller was betrayed by the agency so he took the Sparazza name, and began his criminal rise. Buddy Israel is in fact his son, and the movie is actually about Sparazza trying to get Israel's heart for a transplant. The FBI could not risk losing the information he possessed, so they went after Israel. After learning this, Messner kills Sparazza and Israel to set things right, or as an act of vengeance.
- Nestor Carbonell as Pasqual Acosta: A bloodmoney mercenary and torture expert whose trademark is a stiletto and pistol he keeps hidden under his left sleeves. Acosta went to the hotel as a FBI agent but, after killing the head of security, he stole a security uniform. He is found by Carruthers, who was looking for a security guard, and they go upstairs. Once Carruthers finds out who he is, Acosta stabs and shoots him and he too is shot several times. During Georgia's fight with the agents, Acosta stabs Georgia but he is shot again by Messner and the dying Carruthers before he can kill her. He is last seen being carried out on a stretcher, still alive and clutching his stiletto.
In the online comic book on the film's website, it is shown that Acosta killed Morris Mecklen's brother, Marty, in Spain, and thus learned about the Israel situation from him. Kevin Durand (born January 14, 1974) is a Canadian actor known for his role as Joshua in Dark Angel (2001-2002). ...
