Latest release: 4.6.1

BeyondTV is PVR/media center software for Microsoft Windows produced by the american company SnapStream. Like most media center software, and devices such as TiVo and Sky+, BeyondTV allows you to watch, pause and record live TV, as well as scheduled recording, and recording of shows regularly. It also allows you to search for a show in its EPG, allowing the user to find out when shows are on without having to search through all the listings themselves. Some of the more powerful and unique functions that BeyondTV sports are SmartSkip (the ability to automatically detect scene changes, including commercials, and then quickly jump between them) and ShowSqueeze (the ability to automatically compress your TV recordings to other formats and profiles). BeyondTV can also be used in a server - client configuration, allowing one computer to host all your media and tv tuning capabilities, while other computers which are connected to it via a network can stream this information. These additional computers could also be connected to TVs for more comfortable viewing.

As of BeyondTV 4.5, SnapStream now offers an optional DVD burning plug-in. This plug-in allows you to burn directly from the application to DVD. DVD burning is only supported for mpeg2 recorded shows.

Problems

  • Because of the wide range of TV tuners supported, many do not work correctly or do not record to all file types.
  • Only ATSC digital tuner cards are supported, so TV playback cannot be used in countries where DVB is used (most European counties, Australia, India etc) See also: List of digital television deployments by country
  • The software's EPG cannot gather data from the transmission stream, but only from internet sources, so if used on a PC not connected to the internet its functionality is decreased. Also, while SnapStream offer unlimited subscription to their online EPG service, if they were to ever go out of business then its users might have to resort to paid services such as TitanTV

First stage of HTPC project proves tricky - The Tech Report - Page 1 (1020 words)
VER SINCE WE first reviewed an early version of Snapstream's Beyond TV, I have had some form of Shuttle box or the like running this program in Damage Labs, ready to stream video over the local network to any box in the house.
My first step was to rebuild this existing Beyond TV box with better hardware and a newer version of Beyond TV.
Beyond that, I've confirmed my fears that the generally-quiet Shuttle box is still much too loud for a living room environment, and that you'd darn well better have a good wireless keyboard and mouse combo before you attempt to use an HTPC, especially in the setup stages.
