Somerdale is a borough located in Camden County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 5,192.


Geography

Somerdale is located at 39°50'38" North, 75°1'16" West (39.843958, -75.021211)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 3.5 km˛ (1.4 mi˛). 3.5 km˛ (1.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Somerdale borders Gloucester Township, Hi-Nella, Lawnside, Lindenwold, Magnolia, Stratford, and Voorhees.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,192 people, 2,068 households, and 1,379 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,463.2/km˛ (3,778.9/mi˛). There are 2,168 housing units at an average density of 611.0/km˛ (1,577.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 75.35% White, 17.66% African American, 0.21% Native American, 3.24% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.08% from other races, and 2.45% from two or more races. 3.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,068 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 29.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.11.


In the borough the population is spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.4 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $46,898, and the median income for a family is $54,200. Males have a median income of $37,008 versus $31,237 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $21,259. 5.5% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
