Somerville is a town located in Lincoln County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 509.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 58.9 km˛ (22.7 mi˛). 56.6 km˛ (21.9 mi˛) of it is land and 2.3 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 3.83% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 509 people, 202 households, and 136 families residing in the town. The population density is 9.0/km˛ (23.3/mi˛). There are 286 housing units at an average density of 5.0/km˛ (13.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.64% White, 0.20% African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 202 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the town the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 29.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 105.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.4 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $37,125, and the median income for a family is $40,455. Males have a median income of $26,818 versus $24,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,906. 21.7% of the population and 16.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.4% of those under the age of 18 and 17.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Somerville explained that two-month, rather than year-long, appointments were given the chief and deputy so problem areas could be identified by June 30 and a direction for the department determined.
