Sonic the Hedgehog battles Doctor Robotnik (Dr. Eggman in the Japanese version) for six Chaos Emeralds in order rid the world of pollution caused by Robotnik.
Sonic's sprite is smaller and the control is said to feel lighter.
Sonic the Hedgehog is the mascot character of the video game company Sega.
The name is also the title of several entries in the Sonic the Hedgehog series of video games, and of several spin-off comic books and animated cartoons based on the game franchise.
