The division was formed on 13 August1940 in South Africa with its HQ at the South African Military College. On 1 January1943 it returned to South Africa as part of a plan to form two armoured divisions.

In 1972 the 2nd Battalion was inactivated and in 1987 the 1st Battalion was inactivated.
From 1987-1995 the 1st Battalion (Mech) was assigned to the 2nd InfantryDivision in Korea.
On 16 October 1989 the 1st Battalion was reactivated as a parachute infantry battalion and assigned to the 6th InfantryDivision with station at Fort Richardson, Alaska On 16 April 1998 the 1st Battalion was reassigned to the 172nd Infantry Brigade.
