The South Atlantic Blockading Squadron was a squadron of the United States Navy during the American Civil War. It was tasked primarily with preventing Confederate ships from supplying troops and with supporting Union troops.
It was created when the Atlantic Blockading Squadron was split between the North and South Atlantic Blockading Squadrons on 29 October1861. After the end of the war, the squadron was merged into the Atlantic Squadron on 25 July1865.
The Union blockade refers to the naval actions between 1861 and 1865, during the American Civil War, in which the United States Navy maintained a massive effort on the Atlantic and Gulf Coast of the Confederate States of America designed to prevent the passage of trade goods, supplies, and arms to and from the Confederacy.

The NorthAtlanticBlockadingSquadron was based at Hampton Roads, Virginia and was tasked with coverage of Virginia and North Carolina.
DuPont was appointed a senior member of the Commission of Conference to establish naval operations for the North at the outbreak of the Civil War.
He was then given command of the SouthAtlanticBlockadingSquadron, the largest fleet ever commanded by a naval officer up to that time.
His capture of Port Royal, South Carolina, in November 1861 was the first major Union naval victory of the war and demonstrated the effectiveness of the navys improved ordnance against shore defenses.
