Originally a part of Kittery known as "Kittery Commons" or "Kittery North Parish," what is now South Berwick was settled about 1631 in the vicinity of Quampheagen Falls, at the head of navigation on the Salmon Falls River. Here, Ambrose Gibbens (or Gibbons) established a trading post. The community was also be called the Parish of Unity due to the peaceful disposition of its inhabitants. Since 1976, South Berwick has hosted a Strawberry Festival on the last Saturday in June. Originally organized to celebrate the United States Bicentennial, it's popularity has convinced the festival's organizers to hold it each year since.
