South Buffalo Township is a township located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,785.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 72.5 km² (28.0 mi²). 70.2 km² (27.1 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.21% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,785 people, 1,013 households, and 808 families residing in the township. The population density is 39.7/km² (102.8/mi²). There are 1,048 housing units at an average density of 14.9/km² (38.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 99.21% White, 0.14% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,013 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.1% are married couples living together, 5.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.2% are non-families. 17.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.11.


In the township the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 104.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.1 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $42,222, and the median income for a family is $46,389. Males have a median income of $36,970 versus $21,895 for females. The per capita income for the township is $18,106. 4.6% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.8% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

THIS township is bounded on the north by Hopewell, on the east by Canton and Franklin, on the southeast, south, and southwest by Franklin and East Finley, and on the west by Donegal township, of which last named Buffalo originally formed a part.
It is bounded on the south by the lands formerly belonging to Col. David Williamson, on the east by the Brush Fork of Buffalo Creek, and the northern boundary is formed by Buffalo Creek, between the mouth of Brush Run and Buck Run.

On the south of the greater it is the John Bell, Jr., tract, 292 acres and 139 perches, through the central part of which flows a run southeasterly, and south of which is a portion of �Stephen�s Green�.
