South East Cape is the southernmost point of the main island of Tasmania and and also the southernmost point of the mainlands of Australia and Tasmania together. South East Cape is located at 43°38′40″ S 146°49′30″ E. South of the southern coast of Tasmania and still considerably close to Tasmania (unlike Macquarie Island, politically being also a part of Tasmania, which lies much further in the south), there is a group of islands, the Maatsuyker Islands. Some of these islands like The Sisters and especially Maatsuyker Island are located further south than South East Cape. There might be even one island or several islands located for example at about 43°50′ S 146°58′ W which would lie even more in the south than Maatsuyker Island, the southernmost island of the Maatsuyker Islands. Cape Town was home to many leaders of the anti-apartheid movement, despite many of the group's leaders' internment on Robben Island, a penitentiary island 10 kilometres out to sea from the city, where many famous political prisoners were held for many years.
The Western Cape is an important tourist region in South Africa; the tourism industry accounts for 9.8% of the GDP of the province and employs 9.6% of the province's workforce.
Cape Town is served by two public universities: the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
The term Cape of Good Hope was also used to indicate the early Cape Colony established in 1652 in the vicinity of the Cape Peninsula and just prior to the formation of the Union of South Africa it meant the entire region that was to become the Cape Province in 1910.
Geologically, the rocks found at the two capes- and indeed over much of the peninsula- are part of the Table Mountain Group, and are formed of the same type of sandstones as those exposed in the faces of Table Mountain itself.
Cape Town is about thirty kilometres to the north of the Cape, in Table Bay at the north end of the peninsula.
