Southampton Institute is a University College of 11,000 students based in Southampton, United Kingdom. It was made a University College on 1st November 2004 and, as such, now has the powers to award its own degrees. Formerly, degrees were accredited by Nottingham Trent University. It is also now eligible to be considered for the award of full university title.
Southampton Institute is renowned for its liberal arts education but is best recognized in third world countries as an educational centre for those interested in business. It is also a centre of applied research in design and advanced technology, maritime, fine art, history of collecting, film, media and cultural studies, political and international studies, law and a broad range of business disciplines.
Institutions participating in the pilot audits were invited to provide an up-dating note indicating any developments in the partnership from the time of the audit to the printing of this report.
The Institute will wish to consider clarifying the residual obligations that are laid on both partners to ensure that students on courses are enabled to finish their studies, should the agreement be terminated by either party.
In addition, Memoranda of Co-operation with overseas franchise institutions are being amended to incorporate a clause which specifies the residual obligations of both partners in the event of a break-down of the franchise, in particular, as far as students are concerned (Paragraph 16 of the report refers).
SouthamptonInstitute is now consulting over a new title to be submitted for approval to the Privy Council.
SouthamptonInstitute Principal, Professor Roger Brown, said: ?I don?t think it?s exaggerating to say that we are elated at this news.
Students who attend SouthamptonInstitute don't tell their friends back home that they are heading back to the Institute at the end of a holiday, they say they're heading back to uni.
