Encyclopedia > Southend United

Southend United F.C. are an English football team currently playing in Football League Two. Their home ground is Roots Hall stadium in Victoria Avenue Prittlewell. Their nicknames are 'The Shrimpers' or 'The Blues'. Currently the team is managed by former player Steve Tilson. The club was founded in 1906, and has played at Roots Hall since the early 1950's. Their main rival is Colchester United, who currently play in Football League One.


Southend United reached their first national cup final in 2004, competing in the LDV Vans Trophy. However, the team lost 2-0 to Blackpool at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

  • David Webb - former manager and ex Chelsea & England

Southend United played their first ever football match at Roots Hall in September 1906 and they became founder members of the third division in the 1920 – 1921 season.
Southend continued to hover around the third and fourth division during the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s, gaining promotion in to the third division at the end of the 1977 – 1978 season.
The early 1990’s saw Southend make a decent improvement in their league fortunes, reaching the second tier of English football, they introduced Stan Collymore to the football world in 1993 and was prolific in front of goal before signing for Nottingham Forest.

Southend United Football Club is an English football team based at Roots Hall Stadium in Prittlewell, in the Borough of Southend-on-Sea, Essex, which plays in the Football League Championship.
But the prospect of a "golden era" for Southend United had to be put on hold for while after the club sold many of its talented players and the club dropped back into the basement in 1984 to embark of a fight for survival both on and off the pitch.
Southend United were crowned champions on 6th May 2006, the final day of the season, after beating Bristol City 1-0 at Roots Hall in front of almost 11,400 fans.
