Southern Culture on the Skids, also known to fans as SCOTS, is an American music group composed of Rick Miller (vocals, guitar), Dave Hartman (percussion), and Mary Huff (vocals, bass guitar). The band formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA, in 1985. Stylistically, they gravitate towards the rockabilly, surf rock, country music, and R&B genres, with outrageous humor thrown in. The band attracted a modicum of national attention in 1995 with the release of the song "Camel Walk" from their album "Dirt Track Date". SCOTS music is generally very upbeat, as they usually write and perform songs about dancing, sex, and fried chicken, which are main themes in songs such as "Cheap Motels," "Soul City," and "Eight Piece Box". They are also known for their live shows, which often include throwing fried chicken and banana pudding into the audience, and audience members invited to dance onstage. As a general rule, they are not hostile toward non-commercial taping of their shows [2]. Ink 19 :: Southern Culture on the Skids (1586 words)
Southern Culture on the Skids (or more succinctly, SCOTS), are no strangers to the culinary double entendre, seeing as their demi-surf shockabilly mini-anthem "Eight Piece Box" serves up a libidinous musical meal so shockingly sensual that it becomes hard to imagine it is even about food at all.
Southern Culture on the Skids specify that, if they are to be supplied with Kentucky Fried Chicken, it has to be original recipe, and not the ever-popular extra crispy variety.
The SCOTS' campy stage persona and dress, replete with both embracing and caricaturizing of Southern culture, is the definition of hyperbole.
