Southern Federal District (Russian: Ю́жный федера́льный о́круг; tr.: Yuzhny federalny okrug) is one of the seven federal districts of Russia. It is located in the extreme southwest, between Ukraine and Kazakhstan. It includes the Forecaucasus and the Russian part of the Caucasus, the North Caucasus. Its population was 22,907,141 in the 2002 census, living on an area of 589,200 km² (227,491.4 mi²). The current Envoy to the Southern District is Dmitry Kozak, a Putin loyalist. The boundaries of Russia are: on the north, the Arctic Ocean; on the west, Sweden, Norway, the Baltic Sea, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Rumania; on the south, the Black Sea, Turkey, Persia, the Caspian Sea; Afghanistan, and China; on the east, the Pacific Ocean.
Russia shares the possession of the Baltic Sea with Sweden, Germany, and Denmark, and its waters have been the highway of Russian commerce since the time of Peter the Great, although their shores are rugged and reefs numerous.
The greatest increase in the population is given by the region of New Russia, that of the Baltic, and the Province of Moscow.
