Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region is one of the nine ethnic divisions (kililoch) of Ethiopia. It composes the former Regions 7-11. Covering 112,727 km2 in the southeast of the country, its population (as of 1999) is 12,132,000. Its capital is Awasa. Other major cities and towns include Arba Minch, Wendo, Dila, Yinga Alem, Worabe (Silte), Sodo, Bonga and Mizan Teferi. The region borders Kenya to the south, the Ethiopian region of Gambela to the north, the Ethiopian region of Oromia to the north and east, and Sudan to the west.
