Southwestern blotting

Southwestern blotting, played along the lines of Southern blotting (created by Edwin Southern), involves characterizing proteins that bind to DNA. The proteins undergo gel electrophoresis and are subsequently transferred to nitrocellulose membranes similar to other types of blotting. A Southern blot is a method in molecular biology of enhancing the result of an agarose gel electrophoresis by marking specific DNA sequences. ... The name Southern has applied to a number of things over the years. ... A representation of the 3D structure of myoglobin, showing coloured alpha helices. ... Space-filling model of a section of DNA molecule Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions specifying the biological development of all cellular forms of life (and many viruses). ... SDS-PAGE autoradiography DNA agarose gel Gel electrophoresis is a group of techniques used by scientists to separate molecules based on physical characteristics such as size, shape, or isoelectric point. ... Nitrocellulose (Cellulose nitrate, guncotton) is a highly flammable compound formed by nitrating cellulose (e. ...

However, since the first Southwestern blottings, many more have been proposed and discovered- large amounts of proteins and their degradation when being isolated hampered previous protocols. In chemistry and biology, degradation is the decomposition of a chemical compound by stages, with well-defined intermediate products. ...
