A souvenir (from the French for "memory") is an object that is treasured for the memories associated with it.
The term tends to be used for items brought home from places one has visited, and such items are sometimes marked or engraved to indicate that their value is sentimental rather than practical, eg. "A Souvenir from Clacton-on-Sea". These typically include household items such as mugs and bowls, ashtrays, spoons and notepads, or clothing, eg. tee-shirts, hats.
Similar to a souvenir, memorabilia (from Latin, for "memorable") is an object that is treasured for its memories; however, unlike souvenirs, memorabilia are valued for a connection to a historical event, culture or entertainment.
Souvenir proved to be OMD's biggest hit to date, reaching No. 3 in the UK charts.
The idea for the sleeve design for Souvenir stemmed from the lyrical theme of the song, which suggested to designer Peter Saville a French arthouse film showing a blossoming romance between a boy and a girl.
Saville was after a picture that gave the impression of a French street cafe and the picture that caught his eye, taken from a photo library, revealed a view from a balcony onto a Dusseldorf street scene.
