Encyclopedia > Soviet Census (1989)

Introduction

The 1989 Soviet Census was the final and most comprehensive census taken within The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Findings

The census officially recorded the popullation of the USSR at 286,717,000, making it the third most populous country in the world. The popullation had risen 37% from its previous census taken in 1958. Of the whole popullation, about 51% lived in the Russian Soviet Federated Republic, making it the most popullous of the Soviet Rupublics. The rest of the popullation was scattered throughout the rest of the union republics. The only other republic to house a large percent of the Soviet popullation was Ukraine, while the rest of the republics had less then 10% of the Soviet Union occupying them. About 66% of the popullation was urban, a sharp increase from the 1970's.
