The village takes its name from the sulphur and iron spa well on its south west edge. For many years the village waters have been used to ease skin complaints and rheumatism. To this end, the village opened a spa house called The Regency, complete with baths and treatment rooms. There is a lough just outside the village.
Recently the village has grown significantly with the addition of many housing estates including Carnglave Manor and Marcevin grove.
The Spa Golf Club is siuated between Spa and Ballynahinch on the Grove Road. The Golf Club has held qualifying matches for the British Senior Open Championship in recent years.
