Encyclopedia > Spacelike

In the context of special relativity, space-like separated points (or events) in spacetime have a spacetime interval less than 0 (see sign convention). This means that the events cannot be causally connected (i.e. one cannot be a cause or effect of the other) because light from one event cannot reach the other. Observers in different reference frames may therefore see the events as occurring in either order or simultaneously.

A space-like surface is a submanifold of spacetime whose dimensions correspond to spatial dimensions of spacetime (e.g. x,y,z).

Time Travel and Modern Physics (12645 words)
That is to say, they have made it very plausible that, in the billiard ball wormhole case, the time travel structure of such a wormhole space-time does not result in constraints on states on spacelike surfaces in the non-time travel region.
But one might still expect that there should be no constraints on states on a spacelike surface, provided one keeps the surface ‘small enough’.
Thus the reason why the global time travel properties of the counterfactual space-time have to be significantly different from the actual space-time is not that there are problems with metric singularities or alterations in the metric that force significant global changes when we go to the counterfactual matter distribution.
Determinism in Reformed Theology, Calvinism (9134 words)
Einsteinian diagrams of spacetime as a 4-dimensional reference frame were described in the early 1900s, as was much of James' writing.
Perhaps the idea of a 4-dimensional block universe (time as a spacelike dimension) was widespread in the late 1800s.
James decided his first freewill act would be to believe in metaphysically free will -- in opposition to his father's "iron block universe Calvinism".
