Spam is a computer game phenomenon prevalent in the FPS genre, especially in multiplayer game modes. Generally, it refers to the firing or throwing of a number of the same objects into one area of the map. Usually, this takes the form of grenade spamming i.e. a player or players throwing a number of grenades into one area. The term can be used to refer to any type of grenade including frag grenades, smoke grenades or gas grenades. Refering to this type of behaviour as spamming obviously has negative connotations. Players believe that spamming ruins the normal flow of game play. It is often viewed as an action undertaken by unskilled players who seek to frustrate the opposition, or succeed in obtaining "frags" without engaging in direct conflict. Others see spamming as a valid tactic as it prevents the opposition grouping together or camping and many grenades have a greater chance of eliminating opponents than just one. Grenade spamming as a tactic is also possible in single player games and in a developers commentary for the game Call of Duty 2 it is recommended. Frag is a computer and video game term, used in first-person shooter deathmatch. ... Camping is computer gaming jargon for the practice of a player staying in one area of the game world waiting for enemies or useful objects to appear or to come to the player rather than actively seeking them out. ... One form of spam which is regarded as reprehensible by the gaming community as a whole is spawn spamming. As the name implies, this involves the spamming of an enemies spawn point in an effort to kill the enemy as they spawn. Many games include some kind of spawn protection which prevents players being injured for a few seconds after spawning. In computer and video games, especially first-person shooters, spawning is the in-game creation of an entity, for instance a player character, non-player character (NPC), or an item. ...
