FC Spartak Moscow (Russian: Футбольный клуб «Спартак» Москва) is considered to be one of the greatest football teams in Soviet and Russian history. In the early days of Soviet football, many government agencies, such as the police, army, railroads, created their own clubs. Spartak Moscow was created in 1922 as a Folk Team, one that would unite people all across the country. The team became the main competitor by 1936, when it won its first USSR title. But the popularity of the sport grew the most in the 1960s USSR. Spartak fared well, winning two championships in that decade. The 1970s were a time that many fans still remember with shivers. In 1976 Spartak was demoted into the lower league due to poor performances. The next season stadiums were still full of people, as the fans stayed with the team during its time in the lower division. Spartak Moscow came back the next year and reclaimed the gold in 1979, beating Dinamo Kiev. image by http://www. ...

A whole new page in the club’s history started when the USSR was divided and its championship was no more. In Russia, Spartak took the lead role and won 9 titles out of 13. Year after year it also represented Russia in the European tournaments of Champions League, UEFA Cup and Cup Winners' Cup. The problems began when Nikolai Starostin, the patriarch of the club, died and left the whole enterprise to Oleg Romantsev, who also was a coach. Spartak was involved in financial troubles, which resulted in corruption and the inevitable buyout of the club by a wealthy businessman Andrei Chervichenko, who started using the club as a money laundering scheme. He left the club in 2004 and Spartak is starting to slowly regain its old position back. Nickname The team is usually called "red-and-whites", but among fans "The meat" nickname is very popular. Fans of Spartak pronounce it with pride and love, while rival's fans do it in sarcastic manner. The origins of the nickname belong to the days of foundation of the club - in 1920s the team was renamed several times (from "Moscow Sports Club" to "Red Presnya" (for the name of one of the districts of Moscow) to "Pisheviki" (something like "People equipped in food industry") to "Promkooperatsiya" (something like "Industrial cooperation") and finally to "Spartak Moscow" in 1934) and many years the team was under patronage of one of the Moscow food factories which dealt with meat products. 1934 (MCMXXXIV) was a common year starting on Monday (link will take you to calendar). ...
One of the most favourite slogans of both the fans and players is "Who are we? The meat!" The other nickname is "Svini" ("The pigs"). This one is considered offensive.
Rival teams In present days Spartak's archrival is CSKA Moscow, however, this rivalry lives for only a couple of decades. One of the most celebrated rivalries is "Spartak-Dinamo" with neighbours from Dinamo Moscow football club. However, as Dinamo is currently not a very successful team, the rivalry has faded a little. Matches against Lokomotiv Moscow and Zenit Saint-Petersburg attract thousands of people as well, and almost always the stadium is packed. CSKA Moscow (Central Sports Army Club Moscow, Russian: ЦСÐÐ ÐоÑква) is a Russian sports club, often referred to as Red Army for its past affiliation with the Soviet Army. ...
