Spartanburg County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 253,791. Its county seat is Spartanburg6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,122 km˛ (819 mi˛). 2,100 km˛ (811 mi˛) of it is land and 21 km˛ (8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.00% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 253,791 people, 97,735 households, and 69,294 families residing in the county. The population density is 121/km˛ (313/mi˛). There are 106,986 housing units at an average density of 51/km˛ (132/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 75.09% White, 20.79% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.47% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.35% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 2.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 97,735 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.80% are married couples living together, 13.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the county, the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $37,579, and the median income for a family is $45,349. Males have a median income of $33,002 versus $23,911 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,738. 12.30% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.00% of those under the age of 18 and 13.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
