Encyclopedia > Spartoi

In Greek mythology, the Spartes ("sown") were the men who grew from the sown teeth of a dragon. See Cadmus for more details.

Only five survived the battle that accompanied their birth. They founded the city of Thebes. Their names were Chthonius, Hypernenor, Udaeus, Pelorus, and Echion. The latter married Cadmus' daughter, Agave.

Spartoi means "the sowed;" it has the same root as "sperma" which means seed, sperm.
Spartoi implies warriors born out of the serpent's teeth and their descendents, the Thebesians.
