The movie 'Spawn' was released on August 1st, 1997, and was a movie adaptation of the Image Comic of the same name created by Todd McFarlane. The movie starred Michael Jai White as the titular character, with John Leguizamo as The Clown/Violator and Martin Sheen as Jason Wynn, the two villians. Spawn #1 (1992), featuring one of McFarlanes most popular creations Todd McFarlane (born March 16, 1961 in Calgary, Alberta) is a cartoonist, comic book writer, artist, and media entrepreneur. ... John Leguizamo (born July 22, 1964) in Bogotá, Colombia), is a Colombian-Puerto Rican comedian, actor and producer working in the Hollywood, film industry. ... Much like the comic, the plot-line of the movie involved Al Simmons, a soldier, being betrayed by Wynn and dying on a mission. In Hell, Malebolgia (who's voice is done by Frank Welker) offers Simmons a deal: become his servant, and Simmons will be able to return to Earth for his beloved wife, Wanda. Once back, Simmons realizes that he is deeply changed, carrying a living suit he doesn't fully understand and a body decaying as if he were still dead. Spoiler warning: Malebolgia was the King of Hell in the Spawn comics, having brutally murdered his predecessor, as appears to be common practice in Hell. ... The movie, which featured impressive special effects for the time, was a decent box-office success, earining $54 million domestically from a $40-million budget and inspired an animated series on HBO was subsequently created.

Spawn is artist Todd McFarlane's contribution to the venerable genre of the anti-hero.
The main problem with Spawn is that it is almost impossible to sympathise with the protagonist, as he is not a likeable character in death or in life.
Spawn is a farely entertaining romp, although it has little to no lasting effect upon the viewer.

The devil sets up Spawn to be betrayed by his commander-in-chief and, seemingly, by his wife; and then sits back while revenge takes hold of Spawn's soul.
