The Special Forces Support Group (SFSG) is a unit of the United Kingdom Special Forces. Its primary task is to provide large scale Infantry support for the SAS and the SBS. It has been reported to have become an active unit in early April 2006 according to The Sunday Times, and its creation has been announced officially by the then Secretary of State for Defence John Reid in Parliament on Thursday 20 April 2006. The unit's creation stems from the need to provide Infantry support to the Special Forces. This was done on an ad hoc basis by various élite units of the Royal Marines and the British Army, including the Parachute Regiment and Royal Gurkha Rifles. The defence review of 2004 identified a need for a dedicated unit to perform this role. Because of the initial similarity to the US Army Rangers, the unit was dubbed as the British Rangers. Ad hoc is a Latin phrase which means for this [purpose]. It generally signifies a solution that has been tailored to a specific purpose, such as a tailor-made suit, a handcrafted network protocol, and specific-purpose equation and things like that. ... The unit was established to support the SAS and SBS in battle, but will also support police when dealing with terrorist attacks. Although the unit is to provide support to UK Special Forces operations, it will be trained for counter-insurgency and Counter-Terrorist operations at short notice. All those selected for the SFSG have to have passed either the Royal Marines Commando course, the Airborne Forces Selection course run by The Parachute Regiment or the RAF Pre-Parachute Selection course. On operations, the unit may encompass such roles as providing diversionary attacks, cordons, fire support, force protection, and supporting training tasks.
