The American Chad Hedrick, a former inline skater, began his quest to emulate Eric Heiden by taking five gold medals well, racing a time of 6:14.68, 0.02 seconds behind the four-year-old Olympic record of Jochem Uytdehaage, which was enough to clinch gold. The Italian men's team was well behind the Dutch team in their semi-final heat, and although they were gaining it was late in the race and the Dutch seemed en route to a victory. A winter sports week with speed skating, figure skating, ice hockey and Nordic skiing was planned, but the 1916 Olympics were cancelled after the outbreak of World War I.
The 10000 m speed skating was abandoned in the 5th pair, and the 50 km cross-country ended with a temperature of 25 °F (−4 °C), forcing a third of the field to abandon competition.
The 1940 Winter Olympics had originally been awarded to Japan, and were supposed to be held in Sapporo, but Japan had to give the Games back in 1938, because of the Japanese invasion of China in the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945).

The XX Olympic Winter Games will be held in Turin, Italy from February 10 to 26 in 2006.
This will be the second time that Italy will host the Olympic Winter Games, as it hosted the VII Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956, and the third time overall that Italy will host an Olympic Games, as it also staged the Games of the XVII Olympiad in Rome in 1960.
This was just after the IOC had adopted new election procedures during the 108th Extraordinary IOC Session in light of the corruption scandals surrounding the votes for the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics.
